The $24 Woven Laundry Basket I Moved From the Closet to the Bedroom

By Haven & Home|November 8, 2025|6 min read|Last updated: November 2025

I bought a jute rope laundry basket because it was $24 and my old plastic hamper had cracked. I put it in my closet. Then I moved it out of the closet because I was rearranging, set it in the corner of my bedroom temporarily, and then... just left it there. For six months. Because it looked good.

That is the thing about woven baskets that nobody really talks about: they are the rare storage item that looks better in the open than hidden away. A plastic hamper belongs in a closet. A woven jute basket belongs in a corner next to a linen duvet and a ceramic lamp, looking intentional and collected and like you know exactly what you are doing with your bedroom.

I have since added four more woven pieces to my bedroom. Here is the journey, starting with the basket that started it all.

The Basket That Started It All

This is the YOUDENOVA jute rope hamper, and it goes for around $24 depending on the size you pick. The 58-liter version is what I have. It is tall enough to hold a real amount of laundry without spilling over, the braided jute construction is sturdy enough that it holds its shape even when mostly full, and the handles are thick enough to actually carry it to the laundry room without the rope cutting into your hands.

The texture is what sold me. Jute has this natural, slightly rough warmth that photographs beautifully in a bedroom setting. It picks up warm light from bedside lamps and feels at home next to linen bedding, wood furniture, natural fiber rugs. It does not try to blend in the way a plastic hamper does, and it does not try too hard the way some decorative hampers do.

It took me about two weeks to stop thinking of it as a laundry basket and start thinking of it as a bedroom piece. Once that shift happens, everything else follows.

What I Tossed Out First

The second thing I got rid of was the mesh sweater organizer I had been using on my dresser as a catch-all. It held things, technically, but it looked like a bin from the back of a gym locker. I replaced it with the Goodpick 105-liter jute rope hamper in a corner and moved my actual laundry situation to a proper two-hamper system.

The Goodpick is taller and slightly more structured than the YOUDENOVA, with a natural cotton trim at the top that keeps it from looking too rustic. I use this one for the main laundry and it doubles as a visual anchor in the corner of the room. The darker natural tone of the jute works especially well in rooms with warm wood tones or earthy paint colors.

The Nightstand Situation

My nightstand is a small wooden cube that does not have any drawer storage. I added a seagrass basket on the lower shelf for books, a charger, and whatever else accumulates at the bedside over the course of a week. The difference it made to how the nightstand looks is embarrassing, because the fix cost $18.

Seagrass is tighter-woven than jute, which gives it a cleaner look that works in slightly more modern spaces. This set comes with two sizes, which means you can use one at the nightstand and one somewhere else, on a bookshelf, in the bathroom, on a dresser.

The One I Put by the Closet Door

I have a corner near my closet where I used to pile things I was not ready to deal with: a sweater I had not put away, a bag I emptied but had not put back. Classic doom pile territory. I put a large cotton rope bin there and it absorbed all of it.

The cotton rope bin has a different texture than jute, softer and slightly more relaxed-looking, which works if your bedroom is more casual or eclectic. This one comes in a few colors but the natural white is the most versatile. The wide opening makes it easy to toss things in from across the room.

What I Would Buy First If I Were Starting Over

If I were building this from scratch, I would start with the mDesign seagrass closet basket before anything else. It is smaller and more structured than the laundry-focused options, which means it works as a visual accent rather than just storage. I use mine on a floating shelf above my dresser for things I want accessible but not visible: extra candles, a spare phone charger, a small notebook.

The mDesign has a tighter weave and cleaner proportions than most natural-fiber baskets in this price range, and it comes in a few sizes so you can buy a set and stack or line them up without everything looking mismatched. It is also the one piece I point to when people ask how I made my bedroom look like I actually tried.
