The $12 Spice Gripper Strips I Put Inside Every Cabinet Door

By Haven & Home|December 18, 2025|5 min read|Last updated: December 2025

I have a confession: I used to reach into my spice cabinet and just... give up. Jars rolling around, three bottles of cumin buried behind a family-size container of paprika I bought in 2019, oregano MIA. Every time I needed something while cooking, I'd dig through the whole cabinet and still end up using dried thyme when I wanted basil.

Then I found spice gripper strips — those little plastic clip strips that mount inside your cabinet door — and I put them in every kitchen I've organized since. They cost about $12 for a set, take maybe 10 minutes to install, and completely change how your spice cabinet functions. I'll walk you through every problem they solve (and the one version you should skip).

The "Spice Avalanche" Problem

When jars fall every time you open the door, that's not a storage problem — it's an architecture problem. Stacking spices flat on a shelf means they're always fighting gravity. Gripper strips mount to the vertical surface of your cabinet door and hold each jar independently, so nothing can tip into anything else.

The magic is in the clips themselves. Each one grabs the jar at the lid, holding it firm enough that it won't bounce loose when you close the door, but loose enough that you can pop a jar out one-handed while you're stirring something on the stove.

These are the ones I keep coming back to. The adhesive actually holds — I've had sets up for over a year without a single strip falling down. If you want even more confidence, there are screw holes too so you can add a couple of screws once you're happy with the placement.

The "Can't Find the Cumin" Problem

Spice organization fails when you can't see what you have. Shelves force you into rows — you see the front row and that's it. Door-mounted strips let you spread everything across the vertical surface so every jar is visible at a glance when you pull the door open.

The trick is to organize by cooking style rather than alphabetically. I put baking spices on one door, everyday savory spices on another, and specialty/rarely-used stuff in the back of the shelf. Once everything has a clip, you stop buying duplicates because you can actually see what you own.

One important note: measure your cabinet door before ordering. Most standard strips work on doors at least 11 in. wide, but if you have a narrow pantry or older cabinets, double-check the strip dimensions before buying.

The "No Counter Space" Problem

The real win with door-mounted organizers is what you get back. When your spices move to the door, a whole shelf opens up. That shelf can now hold oils, vinegars, or the appliances that were cluttering your counter.

A lazy Susan in that newly freed shelf works beautifully for oils and condiments — round bottles are hard to line up, but they spin beautifully on a turntable. I like the bamboo ones from SpaceAid because they look intentional rather than utilitarian.

What to Skip

The magnetic spice tins that mount to the fridge look incredible on Instagram, but they have a few real problems: the tins are small (great for one-jar cooks, frustrating for anyone who actually bakes), transferring spices is annoying, and the labels that come with them are usually either too generic or too small to read quickly. If you love the aesthetic, go for it — just know you're optimizing for looks over function.

Also skip the wall-mounted spice racks that screw into your backsplash unless you own your home. They leave big holes and the anchors often strip out of tile grout. Gripper strips stick to the interior of your cabinet — no permanent damage, no lease violations.

Quick Tips

  • Let adhesive cure overnight before loading jars — the 3M backing needs time to fully bond to the cabinet surface
  • Start with your most-used spices on the door and keep specialty jars on the shelf where they're not taking up prime real estate
  • If your cabinet door has a raised panel, stick the strips to the flat center section — the raised edges give the door some extra rigidity
  • Measure your jar diameters first: most standard McCormick and Spice Islands jars are about 1.75 in., but some specialty brand jars run wider
  • Use a level or painter's tape guide to get your strips straight — crooked strips bother you every single time you open the door
