The $24 Pull-Out Spice Rack That Saved My Narrow Cabinets

By Haven & Home|October 22, 2025|4 min read|Last updated: October 2025

For ten years I kept every spice jar I owned in a single cabinet above my microwave. Every single time I needed cumin, I knocked over oregano. Every single time I grabbed oregano, paprika came down on my head. I tried drawer inserts (the drawer was too shallow), magnetic strips (the jars were too big), and a tiered lazy Susan (I couldn't read the labels on the back row). I gave up and just dealt with it.

Then I measured a random 4-inch gap between my fridge and my pantry cabinet, ordered a $24 pull-out spice rack on a Sunday, and by Wednesday my spice problem was over. I'm not exaggerating — it's the single best $24 I've spent on my kitchen. What follows is the one I bought, plus the five other narrow-cabinet options I tested along the way so you don't have to.

The One That Actually Worked

I didn't want another thing on my counter. I didn't want to drill. I wanted spices that came out, stayed in order, and disappeared when I was done. A slim pull-out rack with rubber bumpers that wedges into an unused gap between appliances or cabinets did all three.

Slim Pull-Out Spice Rack on Wheels (4 in. wide)

Slim Pull-Out Spice Rack on Wheels (4 in. wide)

$24

(4,200+)

Three-shelf rack in powder-coated steel. Rolls on four wheels, locks in place when pushed back. Holds about 18 standard spice jars. Comes in 4 in., 6 in., and 8 in. widths.

What I Tried Before That

Each of these has a case where it's actually the right answer — just not for my specific cabinet.

In-Drawer Spice Organizer (4-Tier Angled)

In-Drawer Spice Organizer (4-Tier Angled)

$29

(9,100+)

Expandable bamboo insert that angles jars so you can read labels from above. Works in drawers at least 3 in. deep. I loved it — my drawer was 2.25 in. deep. Check first.

Cabinet Door Spice Rack (Adhesive)

Cabinet Door Spice Rack (Adhesive)

$19

(3,500+)

Four wire shelves that stick to the inside of a cabinet door with industrial adhesive strips. Nice idea, but my door didn't close all the way with jars on it. Good if you have 3+ in. of door clearance.

Magnetic Spice Jars for Fridge Side

Magnetic Spice Jars for Fridge Side

$32

(5,700+)

Set of 24 magnetic jars with a shaker lid and labels. If you have a fridge with a magnetic side wall (not stainless), this is a free-floor-space win. My fridge was stainless. It wasn't.

Expandable Clear Cabinet Spice Rack

Expandable Clear Cabinet Spice Rack

$27

(2,100+)

Tiered acrylic riser that stretches from 10 in. to 21 in. wide. Great if your cabinet is shallow but wide. Didn't fit my narrow vertical space, but it's what I'd recommend for standard 12 in. cabinets.

Under-Cabinet Pull-Down Spice Shelf

Under-Cabinet Pull-Down Spice Shelf

$38

(700+)

Wall-mounted shelf that swings down from under an upper cabinet. Ambitious — requires screws into cabinet bottom. If you own the place and want to maximize vertical, consider it. Renters: skip.

What I'd Do Differently

If I started over, I'd measure every gap in my kitchen before buying anything. The 4-inch space between my fridge and cabinet was wasted for a decade because I assumed nothing fit. Something did. Something almost always does.

The other thing: buy one narrow pull-out first and see if you actually use it. I bought one, used it daily for three weeks, and then bought a second for cleaning supplies next to the stove. Now there are two. Both earn their spot.

Quick Tips

  • Measure in three places: width, height, depth. Write them down before shopping.
  • Check wheel diameter on pull-out racks. Smaller wheels snag on tile grout lines.
  • Buy identical jars once the rack is in. Mismatched jars waste the organization.
  • Put the spices you use daily in the front row. Rotate seasonal ones to the back.
